The lockdown delay has meant we’re not quite where we thought we would be at this stage of the summer. The perfect tonic we all need for this dreary June therefore, is a trip to the theatre. At present, public performances can go ahead with restrictions in place. For the many people involved and everyone who has completed Netflix, the experience is still well worth it. Here’s our guide to the upcoming shows you won’t want to miss and some updates on what to expect.

Bagdad Cafe at the Old Vic

Emma Rice and the Wise Children Company bring the iconic 1987 film Bagdad Cafe to The Old Vic stage. This joyful celebration of togetherness, hope and friendship in their signature playful style will provide a fantastic evening for all the family. Covid-19 measures are currently in place. Face coverings, temperature checks, staggered arrival time and socially distanced seating are all mandatory. Remember when booking to choose all the seats in a bubble as you will need to collect them at the same time.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Globe

The raucous 2019 production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream returns with piñatas, streamers, glitter and a cacophony of brass for the Summer 2021 season. Direction is by the Globe Associate Artistic Director Sean Holmes and music is performed by members of the Hackney Colliery Band. The usual rules apply including face coverings, staggered entry and socially distanced seating (and standing if in the yard).

Cinderella at the Gillian Lynne

The much anticipated (and much delayed) debut of the new Cinderella musical postponed its opening night again last month after the government announced an extension to lockdown on the 14th of June. Despite the setbacks, the creative team behind the show is promising to say the least! Living legend Andrew Lloyd Webber provides the music treatment while the original story is written by 2021 Oscar winner Emerald Fennell. Tickets are selling fast but some are still available for shows at the end of July. Snap yours up now and cross your fingers.

Singin’ in the Rain at Sadler’s Wells

The all-tapping, all-splashing extravaganza will definitely put a smile on your face. Based on the famous musical movie, you’ll recognise the songs, the sequences and enjoy it so much more in 3D! Ticket holders are required to submit details for contact tracing purposes, seating has been reduced to maintain social distancing, face coverings must be worn and entry will be staggered.
