The Return Of The Great Indoors | Galleries Are Back

Anyone else not loving the May weather this year? Same. Thankfully, from the 17th May (lockdown restrictions permitting), many indoor activities, including art galleries will be open. One of the best things about this city is the world-renowned art and exhibitions we’re lucky to have on our doorstep. Take a look at our pick of the free and ticketed events that are opening this month.

Yayoi Kusama, Infinite Mirror Rooms, Tate

You may not recognise Kusama by name but you’ll surely recognise his infinite mirror rooms from the gram. The Tate is finally able to present two of Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Rooms in an exhibition which was postponed from last March. Spots are booking up fast but there are still spaces available for weekdays. Book yourself an afternoon of annual leave and immerse yourself in Kusama’s unique vision.

David Hockney, Royal Academy  

Remember that amazing spring last year? Luckily, the hugely talented David Hockney captured the blossoming season from his home in Normandy. All 116 new works in the collection were created on his iPad and are a vivid and uplifitng celebration of the natural world. Tickets for the exhibition are on sale now and weekend slots are filling up fast.

The National Gallery

Enjoying world-famous art doesn’t need to take up your whole day or even cost you a penny. The National Gallery is literally bursting with paintings you’ll recognise and is absolutely free to visit. Why not pop in to see Van Gogh’s Sunflowers while you’re on your way to Soho? Sign up to their mailing list and keep updated on how to visit the gallery once restrictions lift.

Whitechapel Gallery

If you like your art a little bit abstract, the Whitechapel Gallery in Shoreditch is the one for you. Amongst the upcoming shows is Picasso’s contemporary, Eileen Agar’s ‘Angel of Anarchy’ exhibition. This retrospective takes a closer look at her unique style and career which includes paintings, photographs, sculpture and even ceremonial hats.

Philip Colbert, Lobsteropolis 

Fans of pop art and Spongebob alike will enjoy one of the many new exhibitions at the Saatchi Gallery in Sloane Square, Lobsteropolis. Phillip Colbert takes his inspiration from an eclectic range of cultural references, including a lobster-y interpretation of a Vincent Van-Gogh work. Why the lobsters you may ask? Colbert once said, "I became an artist when I became a Lobster". Book your slot now.
