London Grilling: Chip Seelig, Executive Producer of Come Alive!
This week we had the honour of interviewing Chip Seelig, Executive Producer of Come Alive! The Greatest Showman Spectacular, now showing at Empress Space in Earls Court. With an incredible career in the industry, working on films and projects such as A Complete Unknown, Poor Things and of course, The Greatest Showman, we are so excited to discuss his latest live event project.
Welcome Chip! Tell us, what was the first live show you experienced?
I started as a patron of theatre in New York eventually becoming a board member of the Roundabout Theatre in the US. I worked on a few Broadway plays before producing a live event based on Jim Cameron’s movie Alita Battle Angel.
We are huge fans The Greatest Showman, tell us how it inspired this live show, how does it differ from the movie?
I always loved the music from the movie so the idea of setting it among circus acts appealed to me. We initially developed a show to promote the movie but for a variety of reasons it wasn’t compatible with the theatrical launch strategy.
You have some big names performing in the show, what was the casting process for this production?
We think the stars are the songs by Pasek and Paul. People love these songs from Tightrope to This is Me, everyone has a favorite.
Can you share any memorable moments or anecdotes from the production process?
Watching the story come together. Simon Hammerstein was a powerful force in creating a new story that feature the songs as the key story telling elements.
What has the feedback been like so far since opening?
I think the show makes people happy. The cast, the staff, the entire team really engages the audience. Simon, the showman says in the opening monologue we want this to be the best day of your life and we work hard to help everyone enjoy the show to try to make that statement come true.
You have worked on so many incredible projects across your career, what are some of your favourites?
From working on Wall Street to working in Hollywood, every project has been unique and special but I think this one will go down as my favorite.
We want as many people as possible to enjoy the show so we will look for other venues around the world to exhibit the show but London will always be special.
Where do you like to go in London to get inspired?
I come to the show to watch the audience reaction. Sometimes we bring a young showman/woman from the audience for the final sing along. It can be quite dramatic and always inspiring.
What's next for you in your career?
It’s too early to tell…so far so good with Come Alive!
